The National History Bee and Bowl visited Klahowya Secondary School in Silverdale, WA for our Washington State Championships on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Thank you to The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Washington for your generous grant to help provide buzzer systems for academic tournaments in Washington state, and more thanks to tournament host Jeff Kreifels!
The JV Bee saw 19 students compete for a state title and a berth at the National Bee on Sunday, April 29 in Washington, D.C. Bids were earned by students from the host school, Klahowya, as well as Pope John Paul II and Mercer Island. The top two seeds held to form in the final phase; Addison Jeske (Pope John Paul II) and Kela Harrington (Mercer Island) had each answered their quota of 8 in the preliminary rounds and then made quick work of getting to the final. The final saw Kela beat Addison 5-2.
The Varsity Bee had 14 participants, 7 of whom earned bids to DC. The national qualifiers represented Charles Wright Academy, Klahowya, Wilson, White River, Pope John Paul II, and Mount Si. This diverse final field saw the 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 seeds progress to the second stage. Sarah Sadlier (Charles Wright Academy, #1 seed) made her way to the final phase to face Ryan Roulier (White River, #5 seed). Sarah beat Ryan 5-1 to claim the title.
