Boardman High School hosted the first Northeast Ohio History Bee on Saturday, November 19 and 37 students participated; 25 played the varsity competition while 12 took part in the JV Bee. After the three preliminary rounds, the field separated itself into 10 varsity finalists and 2 JV finalists without the need for tiebreaking tossups. The Junior Varsity final was a closely-matched affair between Andy Nageotte of Olmsted Falls and George Clark of Sebring McKinley. The two were separated by only two points through three preliminary rounds, and that margin held in the final with Andy winning 5-3.
The 10 varsity playoff qualifiers stepped up to the arc of desks and buzzers afterwards. It only took 21 questions to whittle the field to the 5 semifinalists. The trio of Marty Mendenhall, Nathan Seese, and Sohan Vartak of Olmsted Falls were joined by David Kramer of Solon and Michael Coates of Warren G. Harding. It took only 11 questions to find the two finalists; Michael clinched his place first, and David followed one question later. In the final, Michael showed the depth of knowledge that led him to the History subject title at ACE Quizbowl Camp in Campbellsville this July and won 5-1.
The layout of Boardman’s building made for a very smooth running bee and provided plenty of room for everyone to watch both exciting Bee playoffs. We thank BHS and social studies teacher/quizbowl coach Brian Racz for their hospitality and wish all participating students the best of luck in the rest of the 2011-2012 season!
