The National History Bee and Bowl held the Hawaii History Bee at ‘Iolani School in Honolulu, HI on Saturday, December 17, 2012. We had a small but enthusiastic group of students on six teams. Congratulations to Ken-Ben Chao for winning the Varsity and Kenneth Lee for winning the Junior Varsity division! Jason Lovi and Matthew Calahan were the respective runners up; all four of the top students attend our host school, Iolani. Special thanks to Waianae for coming in from Western Oahu and to the Anderton family from Kauai, whose 7th grade son Andy played in the Junior Varsity Bee, representing the Hawaii Technology Academy, and came in third!
We’d also like to thank Professor Jeffrey Bingham Mead of History Education Hawaii for all his help and support for over the past fourteen months which helped quite tremendously in getting the word out. Thanks also to Mr. John Bickel at Iolani for all his help with the tournament arrangements and to Kenneth Lee for assisting with outreach too.
We will certainly be back in 2012-2013, and we wish Iolani the best of luck as they represent Hawaii at our National Championships!
